Safer Sex Tips for the Rocky Mountain State

Happy 303 Day! It’s always time for fun in Colorado! While some folks get their jollies on the slopes with Colorado’s famed winter sports, there’s others who are going to add steamier activities to their Rocky Mountain repertoire. Here’s a few tips to help you stay safe, happy, and healthy while having sexy times Colorado-style!

Hydration and Lube

Much of Colorado exists at altitudes far above sea level. Denver itself sits at 5280 feet above sea level and destination cities like Breckenridge, Vail, and Telluride are even higher, soaring up to heights well above 8,000 feet. At these altitudes the air becomes less oxygenated and our bodies have to work hard to adjust. If someone ascends to these altitudes without proper adjustment while doing strenuous physical activity, such as sex, there is a risk for altitude sickness.

Altitude sickness can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and confusion. In addition, the body dehydrates faster at higher altitudes. In order to stay safe and allow enough energy for sexual activity, it is vital to prepare yourself well for the Mile High+ Club. Fortunately, prepping for high country fun involves fairly simple forethought. Staying hydrated is number one on the list so grab a water bottle and get to sipping! During a sex session make sure to take breaks and drink water frequently. With physical activity it’s also vital to start slow and rest more often than usual, especially when ascending up the mountains quickly.

Hydrating the outside of the body is also especially important! The skin itself is also less hydrated at these levels and can become dry, cracked, and painful. Sex involves a lot of friction over various parts of the body. Lubrication is highly recommended for various body areas; chapstick to keep the lips soft, lotion to keep hands from cracking, and of course a water or silicon based lube for anal and vaginal penetration.

Don’t get Burned by Hot Stuff!

Hot tubbing and fire-side loving are common habitats for the Colorado lover! With such spicy options in the high country it’s important to know to operate in these environments appropriately.

For hot tubs the biggest mistake most make is going for full anal or vaginal penetration while in the water. In general, public bodies of water aren’t good options for sexy times as you don’t know what’s exactly in that water. For natural bodies of water than can mean large varieties of bacteria, and for something like a pool or hot tub that includes different chemicals. Those cleaning chemicals might work great at maintaining the integrity of the hot tub or pool, but they aren’t ideal for the human body. Sex while submerged can also wash away natural as well as silicon or water based lube.

Fire-side sex sounds romantic and intimate and certainly can be if done right! Much like hot tubbing, first make sure you know how to properly operate the equipment you’re dealing with. Ensure that you have whatever you need to put out the fire should an emergency happen. From there, just keep a safe distance from the fire as hot embers + skin does not equal a turnon.

Sex in the great Outdoors

The mountains, snow, and unequivocable scenery in Colorado often proves irresistible for a unique sex adventure. Tempting though it may be, the first thing someone should make absolutely sure of is that you don’t end up in the wrong type of handcuffs! Much of Colorado’s tempting terrain is either locally or federally owned. It does us all well to remain respectful of others and keep our nature loving to private areas in order to avoid legal consequences as well as just being a good neighbor in general.

That being said, if you and your sweetie do find a safe space for outdoor fun, it’s good to keep the following tips in mind. Firstly, these are quickies, not marathon sessions! In colder temperatures, the risk of frostbite, or the more mild frostnip, increases as air temperature falls below 5 degrees Fahrenheit, even in low wind speeds. In a wind chill of -16.6 F frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes. Keep clothing or warm blankets nearby and easily accessible so you can warm your skin as soon as possible.

It’s also good to be aware that blood flow slows and capillaries restrict and narrow in cold temps. This means an erection for penis-having folks may be difficult to achieve and maintain. For those with vaginas, natural lubrication and relaxation can also be difficult in cold temps. Listen to your body and if your body is not responding well to a chilly adventure, move the fun inside!

Finally, it’s important to remind ourselves that when we’re in more natural habitats, the nature comes first! Whether you’re taking a private hike in warmer temps, or feeling frisky in a natural hot spring, it’s vital to put the health of the natural environment around us in sharp focus. Most Coloradans are staunchly protective of the environment around us so do your research and don’t be causing nasty long-term consequences while doing the nasty! Many parks ask visitors to keep to trails or certain areas and they have good reason; less considerate citizens can cause major damage to these epic habitats. Familiarize yourself with general outdoor etiquette, if it seems like a sexy under-the-stars-or-sun encounter will result in disrespect for Mother Nature, save it for the cabin!

Overall, Colorado proves time and again that mountains are for lovers! With just a bit of preparation you can have an especially memorable romp in the high country while staying safe
